Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 (64 bit) seems to be the best alternative to Windows Vista as a powerful workstation. With a little change you will be able to adapt Windows Server 2008 x64 as most powerful workstation ever.
It is so easy to use a Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition as your primary workstation. I already did it and I believe it is the best workstation I ever had. I have been many time disappointed with Windows Vista x86 and because of that Windows Vista x64 was the best choice for replacement but now I am sure that Windows Server 2008 x64 is giving me over 33% more performance.
After you install Windows Server 2008 x64 you cannot use it right away as a workstation because many services are deactivated which are automatically activated in Windows Vista after new installation. But it is very good point because you can activate what you really want to. After you are done with the firs setting you can say you have the most powerful workstation ever with Windows Server 2008 x64.
Every Windows user has had the same experience and that is reinstalling Windows every few month because your Windows will be so slow that you cannot take it anymore. This problem does not meet Windows Server 2008 x64 no longer. There is no need to install Windows Server 2008 x64 because it just works and I do not know why.
Right now Microsoft is working on Windows Code Name 7. After users experiences with Windows Server 2008 x64 Microsoft should recognize Windows Server 2008 x64 as a "guerrilla workstation".
Windows Server 2008 x64 is a great operation system. Microsoft should update Windows Server 2008 x64 that the workstation users will be able to use Blu-ray or HD DVD media because Windows Server 2008 x64 does not support these features.
In fact, Windows Server 2008 x64 needs some changes for being used as a desktop operation system. In this article there is a PDF file which you can download. It shows how you can make a powerful workstation and desktop operation system with Windows Server 2008 x64.
Even the effects of Aero interface of Vista can be activated in Windows Server 2008 x64. I have recorded that my Workstation with Windows Server 2008 x64 works with the same high performance even if I activate the Aero Interface.

The only disadvantage for Windows Server 2008 x64 is its price. In the basic version of "standard Edition" Microsoft Server 2008 x64 requires for around 1000 U.S. dollars.
You can install Windows Server 2008 x64 without serial number just like Windows Vista and use it for 60 days and you are allowed to renew your test version with 100% functionality for at least 3 times.
