Whether you’re heading for a road trip or going out on a family vacation, you will need a rent-a-car at affordable prices. You can always get a good deal by planning ahead of time. If you wait until the last minute, it will be difficult for you to get a good bargain. Renting a car for a good price can be challenging. You will find that each rental car company offers different prices, plans and policies. Shopping around can save you money.
Getting a good bargain requires planning and not waiting until the last minute. Last minute car rentals mean you’ll likely have to pay full price and either wait for a car in your price range, or settle for a car that doesn’t meet your needs. Another way to save money is to book a package deal. Popular tourist spots like Florida, Hawaii and California have flight, hotel and car rental packages that are hard to beat.
Never offer to pay full price. Discounts and coupons are available everywhere and the prices available online can be reduced further. Calling around and asking for better rates are just a few strategies that you can employ for securing the best priced deals. Compare prices at car rental company websites. Once you have the best price, don't hesitate to ask for discounts. Also, if you have booked via a national number, call the local branch for any special offers that may be better than what was offered.
If you plan to rent a car for several days, for instance for more than a week, ask for weekly rates and compare. At times, it is cheaper to pay the weekly rates than paying for individual days. Also, get to know the difference between weekday prices and weekend prices. You'll pay a lot less, for a rental if you can plan your pickup for a Thursday afternoon when the weekend price kicks in. By doing so, you can save close to 50 percent.
Before renting a car, always check the auto insurance and major credit cards to see whether you are covered while driving a rental car. If your credit card covers you, then use your card to pay for the rental. And if you are covered, either by your auto insurance or credit card, then you should decline the rental company’s insurance. It's better paying your own deductible than relying on the insurance offered by the rental company. However, rental car insurance is imperative, so be sure you are covered before driving off in your rental car.
Also, though it takes a little extra effort to find out about the rental company's fuel policy, it’s better to drive off with a full tank and return the car with a full tank, then to pay extra for the rental company’s “half tank” fee. Or even worse, letting the company refuel the car upon returning and pay their inflated prices that cost more per gallon than the prices available at the local gas stations.
Lastly, make sure that you understand the rental company's mileage policy. Some companies offer unlimited miles, while others may charge you for per mile after a certain limit. If, so then try not to exceed the limit. Moreover, always return the car on time. If you are a few minutes late, you may have to pay the full day charge. If you don't know exactly when you are planning to return your car, and then reserve it for a little longer, this way you can avoid paying extra and will always stay within your budget!
